This Tuesday started off with a rainy walk to the hospital. There are no sidewalks here, so we take a mud path to the hospital when it rains. Which most people walk every where in Kenya, so I think they should really invest in sidewalks. That and it would also make it safer because we wouldn't have to dodge any matatus. At least they honk at you before they are about to hit you on the side of the road.
Rounds were pretty relaxed today. The smell was not so bad because it was cooler and rainy. It made it bareable. I had my first patient pass away today. I was not there to witness it, but I saw his body being rolled out of the wards. He was one of my TB patients. Sad.
We all came back to the IU House for lunch where traditional Kenyan food was served. We had ugali, sakumuwiki, lentils, and watermelon. Ugali is a corn based food that is very bland and looks like mashed potatoes, but is much heavier with a weird texture. It is not very good. Sakumuwiki is what Kenyans call kale/greens. It pretty much just tastes like grass to me. Gross. I'm not a big fan of the lentils, and the watermelon is pretty pathetic. So I guess I didn't have much to eat for lunch.
We headed back to the hospital after lunch for a discussion on TB, and then we talked about some of our patients. Molly has a patient with Stevens Johnsons Syndrome, and I am going to go to her side of the ward and see what it looks like tomorrow. I have heard it is disgusting! But honestly, how often will I get the chance to see SJS?
For dinner we had pasta with meat sauce, sides, and some amazing chocolate cake. A guy I call Orange Julius made it. He works in the kitchen and is hilarious! I bought a new bag that was made by our cook Penina. It is super cute and hangs across my body. It is huge and can hold a bunch of stuff, for only Ksh 700. What a steal! Now what souvenirs should I get for my family and friends? Hmmm....
