Saturday was a packed day. I started off the day by sleeping in and then taking pictures of the IU House grounds. I layed in the sun for a bit, and boy is it potent here. After a relaxing morning, we went into downtown Eldoret to go souvenir shopping. I got a lot of neat stuff. We went to what are called Bandau Shops. They are basically wooden huts that are packed full of neat stuff. I also got to practice my haggling skills. I am pretty good if I do say so myself. We then went to a shop called Robert's. He has many items for sale, and he can make anything you request. I am requesting a few things to be made especially for me. I cannot wait to see them when they are done! We plan on heading into town again tomorrow to go to a shop called Be Smart. There you pick out and purchase fabric, and they will make any kind of dress you want. I figure I may as well have 1 authentic Kenyan outfit.
After a long day of shopping, we went to dinner at Mamma Mia's. I ordered the bread crumb fish, which was delicious. We headed back to the IU House to play RockBand with our preceptors Sonak and Rahki. It was so much fun! We all took turns playing and singing. I was pretty much the lead singer since instruments arent my thing. After RockBand, we played a game where you rap along to songs. I did a duet with Sonak to 'Nothin but a G thing'. I think Rachael Deakin still has me beat for rap star of the year, but I am a close second.
Once the games were over, we headed out to Spree. It was packed last night. There were no open tables, and practically no standing room. It was a very weird night for me there. First, on my way back from the bathroom with Molly, a rather large Kenyan man grabbed my arm and asked me to dance. I declined respectfully, but he would not let me go. He had my arm held so tight that I couldnt get away and I was shouting to my friends to help me out. Craig, the only guy who went out with us 4 girls, went and had a talk with him. Right before this happened, I got stopped at the bar by a Kenyan man wanting to take a picture with me. I took the picture and left. Later, I was walking by and he grabbed my arm telling me that his friend was in love with me. The whole getting grabbed and not being able to get free was getting old at this point. It made me really nervous at just how aggressive the Kenyan men are here. He was begging me for my number, so I told him not to beg because it's pathetic. He let me go after I dissed him. One final time during the night, the same guy who grabbed me the first time, did it again. Apparently he doesnt know what no means. This time our friend named Kelvin, rescued me. He told me if that ever happens I should shout for a bouncer, and they will help me out. I dont think I will be needing help anymore because I just refuse to go back to Spree. All the man handling totally freaked me out. Over it! We came home pretty early, which Craig was not happy about. He was planning on staying out until 6a. All in all, it was a fun night. But maybe my last fun night out for a while.
This morning, Myra and I woke up and went to church with the director of the med students, Geren, and his family. We went to a Pentacostal church. The service was about 2 hours long (and remeber, I am used to the strict Catholic hour) and I was getting restless by the end. The sermon was all about how everyone should pray often. The preacher told a couple of interesting stories, one which involved a jelly fish. The man upstairs and I had a good time hanging out, but I still prefer my church at home. The cool thing about the chuhrch here was that it is open air. It is gorgeous!
Now I am sitting wasting time until I get to Skype with Reese!! I will post pics of the IU House later, my computer is being a jerk and deleting my pictures when I rotate/edit them. Who knows. I'm working on it :)
